Mind-Skin Health Index (MSHI)

A New Tool for Psychodermatologic Assessment

MindSkinCanada is proud to introduce the Mind-Skin Health Index (MSHI), a novel, patient-centered screening tool designed to facilitate the early identification and appropriate referral of psychodermatologic conditions. Developed through a rigorous, multi-phase process involving extensive literature review, expert consensus, and invaluable patient feedback, the MSHI addresses a critical gap in routine dermatologic and primary care assessment.

What is the MSHI?

The MSHI is a brief, 16-item screening tool intended to help healthcare providers identify individuals who may be experiencing psychodermatologic distress. It is designed to be completed quickly (under five minutes) and uses flexible, non-condition-specific language, making it suitable for use across various clinical settings including dermatology clinics, primary care offices, and mental health services.

The tool includes a core scored section (Questions 1-11), which assesses common psychosocial and functional aspects of condition-related distress, as well as additional screening items (Questions 12-16) that capture other clinically important symptoms and are recorded separately rather than added to the total score. This structure is intended to support both brief screening and more focused clinical follow-up when needed.

Important Disclaimer:

The MSHI is a screening tool designed for early identification and referral guidance, not a diagnostic instrument. It is not a substitute for comprehensive clinical assessment by a qualified healthcare professional. Psychometric evaluation, including assessment of dimensionality, reliability, and diagnostic accuracy, is ongoing to further establish the clinical utility of the MSHI. Positive responses to certain additional screening items may indicate the need for further assessment, safety evaluation, or referral based on clinical judgment.
